Christi’s Albino Chicken

Let me tell you about the first time my lovely bride cooked for me…

Actually she cooked for me and her daddy, but I like to tell everyone it was her first meal for me…

We were still in the dating stage of our relationship, and for some reason Christi’s mother was out of town. So, Jane wrote some very detailed instructions on how to cook fried chicken. At some point in the process, Christi got confused by the instructions. Very clearly it says, pour oil in the pan half way full. What it didn’t say was heat the oil before placing the battered chicken in the pan…

Needless to say, the cool oil washed all of the batter from the skin of the bird parts. So…

Christi calls me in there (I’m not a Southern Belle and have no idea how to cook fried chicken) and asks me what I think… I say, well maybe she meant to fill the bottom of the pan half way; you know, just barely put oil in the pan?

Needless to say, not even her daddy (who if you know Wayne, you know he will not turn down any food) would eat, what we have since then labeled, Christi’s Albino Chicken…

It was pretty simple, if you knew about hot oil and batter that is. Obviously Christi did not and the result was pretty horrendous.

This can be true with our spiritual lives as well.

Rom 10:14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?

Paul asks the Romans three questions.

  1. How can you call on Christ, if you have not believed?
  2. How can you believe, if you have not heard?
  3. How can you hear, without a preacher?

We can answer all of the questions at once with a resounding, you can’t!

Romans the tenth chapter and verse seventeen tells us that faith comes from hearing God’s word. How do we hear God’s word? Well, there are many ways in today’s society, but the most simple and error free way, is by reading it!

It is not just enough that we depend on The Preacher. We need to take it from the proverbial horses mouth: strait from the scriptures.

You might ask, “But why does Paul state that we need a preacher?

Good question, padawan. Let me tell you what I think.

The scriptures that we have today is the preacher… Let me explain.

At that point in time, there was not a whole lot of the written word lying around. The letters that Christ’s disciples had written were just beginning to be passed around and delivered. The accounts of Jesus’ life here on earth as a lowly man and eventual saviour were not in every home and lying on everyone’s coffee table. The “precepts” if you will, needed to be preached from town to city and country to suburbia. Paul is telling the people of Rome, you need to trust in the preachers!

Not all preachers are true though. Paul told the Galatians in his first chapter, verse eight, “But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.”

Let’s go back to Christi’s Albino Chicken. Christi did not understand completely the instructions that her mother gave her. What did she do? She asked someone that knew probably as much as her, or less… Me! I led her astray and gave her poor advice.

When the church was growing, I can only imagine the false teaching that was going around. Today, we have no excuse.

I believe in preaching. The men of Nineveh repented at the preaching of Jonah. 3000 souls were saved upon being baptized for the remission of their sins, on the day of Pentecost, in Act 2.38; after Peter preached a whale of a gospel sermon. The Ethiopian Eunuch obeyed the gospel, upon giving the great confession, once Phillip had preached to him.

In Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians, he says this in chapter one and verse 21: “For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.”

God’s word is preaching. It is the preachings of Paul and Peter and John and Matthew, Mark and Luke. It is the raw word of God. What I do, and many others like me, is nothing compared to what we can find in His word.

Preaching is good. It serves a purpose. There are many out there that need the type of preaching that evangelists the world over provide, but be warned! A man preaching from God’s word is exactly that, a man preaching God’s word. God’s word is the original and we should take heed that we do not allow the mistakes, or misunderstandings of men to cause us to cook Albino Chicken.

Matthew 16:6 Then Jesus said unto them, Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.
