The Nature of The Church – The Bride of Christ

fairviewOne might ask, “What is the nature of the church?”
I think this is a very good question to ask, and one that most people do not know the answer to. I also think the best way to address this question, is to first point out what the church is NOT.
  • The church is NOT just some building that we go to every Easter and Christmas.
  • The church is NOT a place for recreation.
  • The church is NOT a place for socializing.
  • The church is NOT a dating facilitator.
So, then a person might ask, “How do you know the church is not supposed to be these things?”

It is at this point that we look at what the bible says the nature of the church is.
In the scriptures, the church has been referred to as The bride of Christ (Ephesians 5:25-27),
What does it mean to be the bride of Christ? Let’s look at Ephesians 5:25-27 and see.
my bride“Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; (26) That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, (27) That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.”
Husbands and wives want each other to be a good representation of each other. Unless there is apathy, spouses want to be proud of the way each other look, even to the point of showing each other off.
Jesus died for the church, how much more important is it that the church be a representation of him?
In verse 33 of this same chapter, we can see the true relationship of a husband and wife.
“Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.”
What does it mean to be the bride of Christ?
  • It means we enjoy going to the worship service of the church, every time the doors are open; including Christmas and Easter!
  • It means the time we spend with our church family is as good as any other recreational time we could have!
  • It means socializing is secondary to worship, but an inevitable side product of enjoying the presence of everyone around you!
  • It means that God’s family is the best place to bring a special someone when you are dating, or to meet that special someone that is like-minded!
But, it also means this is all done with a deep respect, or reverence, for our husband, Christ, who sacrificed his very life for his bride, us!
